I do this work not only to support families but to improve maternal health outcomes for birthing people and their loved ones. In Missouri, Black women are 4x as likely to die from pregnancy related causes than their white peers and women on Medicaid are 5x as likely to die than those with private insurance. 80% of these deaths are preventable, meaning Missouri could avoid 80% of maternal deaths if all birthing people—regardless of age, race, and zip code—had access to quality health care! So what is the barrier? Well the answer is Racism; which is why for me Birth Work is about reclaiming the communal practices my ancestors used for centuries in order to empower my clients and dismantle the flawed medical system they may navigate.

I am deeply committed to giving Black people the unwavering support and advocacy that they deserve. Like my late Grandmother, Ruth Wilson, I believe in supporting those who need it most. Which means equal access to care is a must.

Therefore I have created the Ruth Wilson Birth Fund to ensure that I am able to offer low cost birth, bereavement, and postpartum doula services for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) & Youth in the St. Louis area.

These contributions will go towards services for BIPOC people & Teens that need support. If you are feeling called to help improve maternal health outcomes for black birthing people and their families, helping them secure a doula will allow them to have continuous support which has been shown to lead to experiences like a:

  • 25% decrease in the risk of Cesarean;

  • 8% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth;

  • 10% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief;

  • Shorter labors by 41 minutes on average;

  • 38% decrease in the baby’s risk of a low five minute Apgar score and

  • 31% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience

The change begins with you. Your contributions are welcome and advocacy is needed.

With much appreciation,

Eboni
