Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Full Spectrum Doula?

A doula is a trained, NON-medical professional that provides informational, emotional and physical support. Full spectrum doulas provide services across the spectrum of reproductive experiences, including birth, loss, medical or planned termination, fertility, family planning, surrogacy, and adoption. No matter where you fit on the spectrum, you can have the information you desire to help you make the best informed decision with support along the way. I’m your coach, advocate, cheerleader, favorite auntie, big cousin, bff, and maid of honor for all things pregnancy, birth & postpartum.

Are Doulas just for “natural” birth?

Short answer is no. Long answer is no matter how you decide to birth you are deserving of unwavering continuous support. I advocate for your preferences, provide information during pregnancy, prepare your partner/support person, and help you navigate discussions with your provider about policies, procedures, inductions, and other medical interventions. I know labor positions for pain relief that help labor progress specifically for if an epidural has been administered. Lastly, the role of a doula is much more than just the support provided during the labor itself. I am here for you throughout your pregnancy and immediate postpartum period too.

Are Doulas the same as Midwives?

Doulas and midwives are NOT the same and each have two very different roles. Midwives are medical providers and are able to perform medical tasks such as cervical checks, blood pressure screening, and provide some medications. Midwives are skilled to recognize variations of labor and perform noninvasive techniques if intervention is needed. A midwife provides prenatal care and “delivers” babies while a doula provides continuous knowledge, physical and emotional support. Together we are a great team!

What is the process to hire you as my doula?

It all begins with a conversation. Schedule a free consultation to share your needs with me and for us to get to know each other a little better. If you decide to move forward from there we will discuss the contract, outline services and make payment arrangements. If paying in increments a non-refundable deposit is required and the balance is due in full by 37 weeks gestation. Boom, just like that I’m your doula!

Won’t my partner feel left out?

I LOVE working with partners to create a cohesive team. I by no means replace your partner; instead I help guide them to feel more confident in supporting you. In the birth space, there's pressure on your partner to take all the pictures, text updates to your family, while being an expert in everything learned from the childbirth class you just finished. As your doula I complement your partner’s care, and provide them support as well.

Why is childbirth education important?

You know the saying, knowledge is power. The same is true for childbirth. We often fear what we don’t know. Childbirth education classes prepare you and your support team for the journey before you so everyone feels confident and informed on not only the birthing process but common interventions, patient rights, and postpartum period.
